The Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, on June 14, 2022, inaugurated the Planning Committee of Nigeria’s hosting of the inaugural United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Global Conference on ‘Linking Tourism, Culture and the Creative Industries: Pathways to Recovery and Inclusive Development. The global event will take place at the National Theatre Complex, Iganmu, Lagos, from Nov. 14th to 16th, 2022.

The Minister of information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed (Kakakin Kebbi) has commended the foresight of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) for embedding skill acquisition training in tour guiding as part of activities marking the 2021 World Tourism Day celebration, noting that it will improve the capacity of personnel needed to boost tourism activities in Kebbi state in particular and Nigeria as a whole.

Every avid Nigerian traveller or globetrotter has one time or the other been referred to as Ajala by their friends, families or acquaintances. Most even use the designation in their pseudo names; names like Ajalabug, Wondering Ajala, Ajalaman, The travelling Ajala. This vocabulary that has become so familiar and part of the Nigerian travel lingua still has little or less known about the origin of its name.

Runsewe and the Good Samaritans

We are supposed to get real groves out of the expected and very timely intervention by the federal government to unbundle Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation ( NTDC).

Last week, we announced that shopping for the right person (s) for the tourism agency must begin in ernest in view of the Orosanye report which placed a full commercialized status on its activities.

Let me report that several calls were received based on the publication, many wondering what are there for NTDC to sell or market, while others provided deep and thoughtful angles to the process. The calls are still coming and am taking notes, researching and taking certain hard look about our cultural, tourism environment and the possible future outlook post covid.

The Director General National Council for Arts and Culture( NCAC ) Otunba Segun Runsewe has described the donation of Thisday Dome in Abuja by Nduka Obaigbena, a frontline media entrepreneur as the gesture with most humane touch.
 
Chief Nduka Obaigbena is the publisher of the iconic Thisday newspaper and chairman of Arise Television, who despite the many challenges posed by covid-19 pandemic on the media sector, went out  of his way to donate the mega dome and converted it to a 320 bed covid-19 isolation center.

The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) recently announced the dates and activities scheduled for their 22nd Annual General Meeting in Abuja. This year’s Annual General Meeting is also an elective AGM, when new Executive Board Members of the national tourism Federation would be elected and sworn-in, on the same day.

FTAN is the official umbrella group for all tourism related private sector operators in Nigeria. The organization was formed over 20 years ago and presently has over 23 member associations including destination organisations, leisure resorts, hoteliers & restaurateurs, training providers, tour operators, travel agents, car rentals, creative arts, dancers guild, the academia, travel media, and et cetera.

The Nigerian government is to upgrade and explore new ways to make the Museum in NOK Community in Kaduna State, North-Western Nigeria a tourist hub as a way of diversifying the country’s economy. Nigeria’s Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu disclosed this while being honoured with the title of Wey Sim Nok (The son that loves the Nok) by the district head of Nok, his royal highness, Mr. Banu Adamu in Kaduna State. 

Dr. Onu, said that the present generation owed it a duty to improve upon the legacies of Nigeria’s forebears to enhance the country’s artefacts through innovation.

The third cultural tourism conference (3-5 December) organized jointly between the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) concluded today in Istanbul, Turkey. Participants declared their support for cultural tourism as a driver for safeguarding living heritage, catalyzing creativity in cities, and spreading tourism’s socioeconomic benefits to all.

A key conclusion from the conference was the need for a clear and strong link between tourism, culture and local community stakeholders. Nigeria is notably missing among the top countries in the Africa Visa Openness Index, an annual survey conducted by the African Union (AU) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
