The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a 22% fall in international tourist arrivals during the first quarter of 2020, the latest data from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) shows. According to the United Nations specialized agency, the crisis could lead to an annual decline of between 60% and 80% when compared with 2019 figures. This places millions of livelihoods at risk and threatens to roll back progress made in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

United Nations Tourism Summit 2021

Recently, the Ugandan President Mr. Kaguta Museveni accused the tourism ministry of failing to attract more tourist in the country. In 2017, about 1.3 tourists visited Uganda bringing in 1.4 billion dollars in revenue. The Ugandan President was quoted as saying:

"A country like Spain that has nothing to show be visited by 50 million people and Uganda just 2 million people and you are here congratulating yourself? Uganda Tourism Board is mediocre and I don't like that type of mediocrity. Uganda has great potential in tourism...other countries have nothing to show but they manage to attract more tourists."

It also stressed that innovation and technology should empower, rather than disenfranchise, host populations and communities and can assist them in retaining their authenticity, while cultural heritage development and preservation should be a part of local and national plans for socioeconomic development through tourism and technology.

The Olojo Festival is a culture festival in the calendar of the Ile-Ife, Osun State which is located in the Southwestern part of Nigeria. It is the celebration of the remembrance of “Ogun”, god of Iron, who is believed to be the first son of Oduduwa, progenitor of the Yoruba people. The festival is held annually in October.

A film, Sweet Revenge, produced by a Nigerian-Canadian film director, Pascal Atuma,   has won this year’s Kevin Hart’s North American Film Competition.  A total of 654 films were submitted for the short films competition. A jury made up of Kevin Hart’s comedy outfit, Laugh Out Loud; Lionsgate, and Just For Laughs team picked the best 10. Still, Pascal Atuma’s Sweet Revenge made the top 10m list.
