It was a solemn occasion as family members, friends and colleagues gather for a service of song in honour of former president of the Association of Nigerian Journalists and Writers of Tourism (ANJET), the late Elder Emeka Anokwuru. He died in September last year after a brief illness.

The late Elder Emeka Anokwuru who died at the age of 65 was also a former council member of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN).

A 1989 graduate of English Language from the University of Port Harcourt, Anokwuru first covered airport and the aviation industry and was a former president of the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC). He later crossed over to travel journalism and was to also serve as the President of ANJET. In his career as a journalist, Anokwuru worked for several media houses which include; Post Express, New Age, Travellers Weekend and the The Sun newspaper.

In a condolence letter to the family, the President of ANJET, Mr. Omololu Olumuyiwa described the death of Anokwuru as a big loss to the Nigerian tourism industry. He said: “Elder’s demise is a big loss to the entire travel and tourism industry in Nigeria. A perfect gentleman, peace maker and also fun loving. Elder loved life and as a travel journalist, he was committed to the industry’s growth and development until his demise.”

In his own condolence letter, the publisher of ATQ magazine and organizer of the Seven Wonders of Nigeria, Ambassador Ikechi Uko, said the late Anokwuru was a member of the Tourism 100 Club of Nigeria and was involved in the search for the Seven Wonders of Nigeria.

Anokwuru will buried on March 10 in his home town at Umuduru Ikpenweafor, Ikperejere, Ihitte Uboma, Imo State.
