Hotel Employees to Down Tools Over Wages

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other unions in the tourism and hotel industry have rejected the plan by some notable hotels in the country to owe workers’ salaries under the pretext of COVID-19 pandemic. The unions said they are already engaging the managements of the hotels from their deliberate attempt to owe workers, March and April salaries.

President of the Hotel and Personal Service Senior Staff Association (HAPSSSA), Adegbe Iyeh, said some employers in the industry are taking some actions contrary to industrial relations rules, which may jeopardize industrial peace in the sector.

Obudu Mountain Resort Repairs Cable Car

In a bid to revive the Obudu Ranch Resort, the Government of Cross River has carried out repairs and maintenance of the cable-car at the resort. Mr Bobby Ekpeyong, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Obudu Ranch Resort, during the test-run on Monday at the ranch in Obudu, said Gov. Ben Ayade was fully committed to bringing the resort back to life. Ekpenyong added that the governor’s commitment was to ensure the resort regained its pride of place in the tourism and hospitality sector of the country.

Eco-Tourism Operations Suspended in Yankari Game Reserve - General Manager

The Bauchi State Government recently announced the closure of Yankari Game Reserve in order to curtail the spread of the Coronavirus. The State's Commissioner for Tourism, Mr. Moddibbo Abdulkadir told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Bauchi that the decision to close the Yankari Game Reserve to the public was in conformity with the to State government public health guidelines on the rampaging Covid-19 pandemic. He said that although, hand washing facilities, sanitizers, scanners and other required items were provided in the popular game reserve, the need to restrict activities in the tourist site is in the best interest of visitors and staff.

Nigeria Solicits UNESCO Heritage Sites for Tourism Development

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has announced plans to enlist more of Nigeria's cultural sites as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Minister stated this during his visit to the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove in Osun State, which is one of the country's two World Heritage Sites, on Tuesday. He said Nigeria’s quest to have more sites designated as World Heritage Sites is due to the abundance of sites that qualify for such listing in the country.

Nigeria to Expand Tourism Using Community Museums - Minister

The Federal Government has announced plans to establish community museums as part of efforts to ensure that local communities benefit from tourism. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the plan on Thursday at the ongoing 4th World UNWTO/UNESCO World Conference on Tourism and Culture in Kyoto, Japan.
 
''In Nigeria, we observed that tourists stay in the big cities when they visit. They visit the museums in the cities where objects gotten from different parts, including the rural areas, are displayed but they hardly go to the rural areas.

Imo State Introduces New Tourism & Hotel Tax

The Imo state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, yesterday said that he signed into law the Imo state Hotel Occupancy and Restaurant Consumption tax law No.35, to generate revenue for the state. Ihedioha who spoke in Owerri, through his Chief Press Secretary, Chibuike Onyeukwu, also added that the governor signed into law the Imo State Employment and Empowerment Trust Fund, Law No.37 of 2019, and Imo State Signage and Advertisement Agency (Establishment)Law No 36 of 2019.
