Miami Beach is the most expensive place in the world to stay this New Year’s Eve, according to new research from Cheaphotels.org. The survey places the Florida resort city at the top of a global ranking based on hotel prices over the holiday period.

The study compared accommodation costs in 60 major cities worldwide. Researchers recorded the lowest available price for a double room for a three-night stay from 30 December to 2 January. Only centrally located hotels with a rating of three stars or higher were included in the comparison.

The cheapest qualifying room in Miami Beach costs $1,187 for the three nights. This price is 197 percent higher than the city’s standard hotel rates in January, showing the sharp premium travellers face over the New Year period.

Rio de Janeiro and New York City follow closely behind. Rio ranks second with a rate of $1,172, while New York City places third at $1,164 for the same three-night stay.

When compared with the last survey carried out in 2022, the largest percentage increase in New Year’s Eve hotel prices appears in Bangkok, where rates have risen by 94 percent. Strong rises were also recorded in Copenhagen, up 67 percent, and Vienna, up 85 percent.

In contrast, prices have fallen most sharply in Phnom Penh. Hotel rates there are more than 60 percent lower than three years ago. At around $20 per night, Phnom Penh is the cheapest city in the survey for spending New Year’s Eve.

Below are the ten most expensive destinations worldwide for New Year’s Eve accommodation this year. Prices reflect the lowest available rate for a double room from 30 December to 2 January. Each figure also shows the increase compared with normal January rates.

    Miami Beach – $1,187 (+197%)
    Rio de Janeiro – $1,172 (+284%)
    New York City – $1,164 (+218%)
    Edinburgh – $1,040 (+316%)
    Sydney – $1,035 (+248%)
    Vienna – $994 (+257%)
    Cancun – $987 (+116%)
    Amsterdam – $924 (+165%)
